Native writer pens second e-book about crossing the nation together with his canine – Occasions-Commonplace
The recently published book by a Eureka writer was inspired by the work of a Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner.
“Ever since I read John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley in the 1970s, I knew I wanted to do that. Wherever he took his poodle for company, I take my beloved “Ambassador of the Smile” Luigi the pit bull, ”said Charlie Brannick, a painter whose new book is entitled“ Pet Friendly Roads ”.
The book is a non-fiction story about Brannick’s 47-day 13,000-mile road trip with Luigi, a rescue from the Humboldt County Animal Shelter in McKinleyville.

“It was great because wherever you are, this is where he wants to be,” said Brannick, calling dogs “the best people”.
Along the way, Brannick says what should actually be just a travel book is “something more than a highlight role of what we see and do”.
“It’s more than the incredible sights, places we’ve stayed, great food, old friends and family we’ve visited. It’s about the ups and downs and the adventure of long haul that don’t fit into a conversation, ”said Brannick. “In the book, it’s condensed and kept at a good pace as I try to entertain you as I learn the lessons that life has for me. In the end it is the journey of my life and I get the life I wanted and am blessed. “

This is Brannick’s second self-published book. His first, filled with poetry and prose, is entitled “North River Songs” and is an autobiographical account of Brannick’s life, including his early days in New Jersey and his later life as a Vietnam veteran in a changing world. In “North River Songs” such as “Pet Friendly Roads” Luigi is featured on the cover.
“Pet Friendly Roads” is a 189-page paperback book containing 62 images, including photographs of Mount Mazama in Oregon, Badlands National Park in South Dakota, Lake Charlevoix in Michigan, Lake Tranquility in New Jersey, and Folly Beach in South Carolina , Fort De Soto Park in Florida, Landry’s Seafood in Louisiana, and more. Meanwhile, there are footage of Luigi – with or without Brannick – enjoying the sights during the trip.
“Most of the time, it’s a big loop around the country, but with a bit of a zigzag,” said Brannick.
He added, “I want to take the reader away for a fun, vicarious experience. I want him or her to see all of the great places through my eyes in snapshot size descriptions. I want him or her to see what it feels like to be me – not boastful, but complete. I ride freely and easily, have a good time and think about my life. “
Both “North River Songs” and “Pet Friendly Roads” are available on Amazon. “North River Songs” is also available from the Humboldt County Library and the Humboldt State University Library.
