The locations inviting distant staff
(CNN) – Working from home has become the new normal for many of us due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
While some have struggled to adapt to this new mode of work, others have come to the welcome realization that their work needs can be met from anywhere and are beginning to explore their options.
As a result, a number of exotic destinations, whose tourism revenues have all but disappeared in recent months, are taking advantage of the situation by offering extended visas to remote workers to bring money into their economies.
From Anguilla to Barbados, here are five of the most alluring destinations currently vying for distant workers.
Anguilla has started a program that allows remote workers to spend three months to a year on the island.

Known for its coral reefs and outstanding beaches, Anguilla is a breathtaking place. Remote workers can now live and work on the 35 square mile Caribbean island thanks to a new initiative.
The UK overseas territory offers extended visas to attract “digital nomads”.
According to the Anguilla Tourist Board, successful applicants can spend anywhere from three months to a year in the country.
While anyone can apply, Anguilla, which has only recorded three Covid-19 cases and no deaths, is giving priority to those from countries classified as “low risk” – where the “prevalence” of coronavirus is less than 0.2% .
Applications from those wishing to arrive on the island by October 31st are currently being accepted, while those wishing to arrive after that date can apply at the end of September.
The fee, which covers two Covid-19 tests plus a digital work permit, is $ 1,000 for those staying under three months or $ 2,000 for those staying between three months and a year.
A family of four staying under three months must pay a fee of $ 1,500 which increases to $ 3,000 if they plan to be on the island between three and 12 months.
Aruba’s “One Happy Workation” program is only open to those with a valid US passport.

Aruba is also ideal as a haven for those currently working from home. However, the “One Happy Workation” program is specifically aimed at US travelers.
The restarted program is open to anyone with a valid US passport and allows workers to live and work in Aruba for up to 90 days. At the same time, it offers special conditions in a number of hotels and resorts with advantages such as free Wi-Fi and all inclusive meals, discounts and additional experiences.
Although there is no fee for the program, which aims to “generate revenue for Aruban businesses and stimulate the local economy”, candidates must book one of the accommodation packages for a minimum of seven days to qualify. The Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino, the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino, and the Ritz-Carlton, Aruba are among the participating properties.
Applicants must also be employed by a company or be registered as self-employed in their home country and may not provide services for an Aruban company or person and receive income from this without additional work or business permits.
However, they are not subject to income tax in Aruba.
Visitors to Aruba must comply with the island’s Covid-19 entry requirements, such as: B. Take out Aruba Visitor Insurance, which costs approximately $ 15 per person per day.
According to a spokesman for the Aruba Tourism Authority, the program has received a strong response since its inception.
At least 1,363 people have submitted applications for the “12 Month Barbados Welcome Stamp”.

Barbados was one of the first Caribbean destinations to launch an attractive program for remote workers following the pandemic.
“Covid-19 has changed the global business landscape as more people work from home,” Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley said in a statement.
“With this new visa, we can give workers the opportunity to work outside of paradise here in Barbados for the next 12 months.”
The program is aimed at “anyone whose job is independent of location” and applicants have the option of moving with their families.
Interested applicants are required to complete an online application form and provide proof of employment and a statement of income of at least $ 50,000 per year for the period they will be based on the island.
There is a non-refundable fee of $ 2,000 for individuals or $ 3,000 for families that will be payable once the application is approved.
Those who are accepted will not be liable for Barbados income tax, and workers who wish to stay longer than 12 months can apply for an extension.
“We have a mechanism that allows people to be in another part of the world, in the sun, sea, and sand, and in a stable society. One that works well,” Mottley added.
“Barbados is the perfect place for you.”
All visitors to the island, who at the time of writing had a total of 185 Covid-19 cases and seven deaths, are required to present a negative test result and undergo a health assessment upon arrival.
A spokesman for the Barbados Tourist Board confirmed to CNN Travel that 1,363 applications had been submitted as of September 14. Approximately 546 of the applicants were US residents.
The island of Bermuda also welcomes remote workers for up to a year.

Bermuda also hopes to convince distant employees to move their home office to the stunning waterfront.
The One Year Residential Certification program allows travelers to move to the self-governing British overseas territory, known for its sandy beaches and clear waters, to work remotely for a year while those with children enjoy the island Private or public schools are allowed to enroll.
The program is open to “remote executives, self-employed entrepreneurs and students engaged in distance learning”, according to a statement by Bermuda’s Prime Minister David Burt.
“If you work remotely from home, please take the opportunity to look into the possibility of remotely working from Bermuda for the next year,” says Burt, before calling the island’s Covid-19 testing regime “the strictest” on the island World.

Georgia isn’t the most obvious destination for distant workers, but the beautiful former Soviet land between the Black Sea and the Caucasus extends one of the most flexible packages.
With “Remote from Georgia” remote workers from 95 countries, including the US, New Zealand and the UK, can live and work there for at least one year without a visa.
Georgia, known for its snow-capped mountains and historic villages, experienced a tourism boom before the pandemic. Five million travelers came in 2019, an increase of 7% over the previous year.
While it has been praised for its successful coronavirus response, with only 1,510 registered cases at the time of writing, its tourism income has been virtually wiped out in recent months.
However, officials now hope that Georgia’s remarkable success in controlling the virus will convince remote workers to temporarily move to the country of around 3.7 million people.
“Georgia has the image of an epidemiologically safe country in the world, and we want to seize this opportunity,” said Georgian Economy Minister Natia Turnava in a statement published in July.
“We are talking about opening the border to protect the health of our citizens, but on the other hand bringing citizens of all countries to Georgia who can work remotely.”
The program is aimed at freelancers, full-time employees, or business owners who can stay in Georgia for a minimum of 360 days, but all remote workers can apply.
To be eligible, applicants must be on a minimum salary of $ 2,000 per month and agree to a 14-day hotel quarantine upon arrival at their own expense.
Proof of health insurance for the duration of the stay is also required.
