Days of Future Previous Prequel’s Time Journey Echoes Avengers: Endgame’s

Legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont discussed the time travel elements of Days of Future Past and how they mirror the method of Avengers: Endgame.

The “Days of Future Past” storyline in Uncanny X-Men was one of the first mainstream comics to focus on time travel. Now, nearly 30 years after its inception, writer Chris Claremont will revisit the world of “Days of the Future Past” in a brand new prequel story.

Speaking to IGN, Claremont discussed how the time travel mechanics in “Days of Future Past” compares to that of Avengers: Endgame. “The crucial part is that Rachel discovers, as far as she remembers, that she is Scott and Jean’s only child, other than that she comes back and Scott is married to Madelyne [Pryor] and their first child is a boy, “said Claremont.” And so the story she comes back to is not the story she remembers. So we’ve already branched the timeline in a pioneering way. And for explanations, go back and check out the critical scene in Endgame between The Ancient One and Bruce Banner explaining timelines and how to fix them. Well, this is one case where the timeline has and continues to evolve differently. “

During Avengers: Endgame, the Avengers use time travel as a means to obtain the Infinity Stones. As the Hulk travels back to the events of The Avengers, he meets the old man in the hope of taking the time stone from her. She explains that taking the stone would cause time to split into a new reality, to which Banner replies that a disaster would be averted if they bring the stones back at the exact moment they were taken.

A character from the “Days of Future Past” timeline traveled to the main universe. Rachel Gray, the daughter of Cyclops and Jean Gray, traveled back in time where she joined the X-Men. She serves on the current incarnation of X-Factor.

The prequel “Days of Future Past” will be part of the Marvel Made Paragon Collection: Chris Claremont Premier Bundle, which also collects some of Claremont’s X-Men stories. The release is planned for March 2021 and can be pre-ordered here.
