For many of the world’s most popular travel destinations, summer is the time of year when tourism peaks and travelers are most likely to spend both vacation days and savings on their getaways. In view of fears about the spread of COVID-19 and the country’s strict travel restrictions to contain new infections, many travel plans have now been postponed or canceled entirely.

The coronavirus pandemic has dramatically disrupted the global tourism sector, with an estimated loss of $ 1.2 trillion, or 1.5% of global GDP, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. With air traffic declining by more than 70% since 2019, and with many potential travelers choosing “stays” instead, UNCTAD estimates that some tourism companies may never recover from the economic impact of this pandemic.

Recently reopened destinations like Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, a current coronavirus hot spot in the US, fear that opening too early will lead to a surge in new COVID-19 infections. Still, after weeks of lockdowns, many countries are slowly returning to a new normal and have since introduced security measures at popular tourist attractions to ensure the safety of visitors.

These pictures show what summer tourism is like around the world amid the coronavirus pandemic.
