World’s first house resort scheduled to open in 2027

(CNN) – If you are dreaming of future travel while stuck at home during the pandemic, why dream of the beaches of Bali or the canals of Venice when you are vacationing in space?

In 2019, the Californian company Gateway Foundation published plans for a hotel in the style of a cruise ship that could one day float above the earth’s atmosphere.

This futuristic concept, then known as the Von Braun Station, made up of 24 modules connected by elevator shafts that form a rotating wheel that orbits the earth, should be fully functional by 2027.

A few years later, the hotel has a new name – Voyager Station – and is slated to be built by Orbital Assembly Corporation, a new construction company led by former pilot John Blincow, who also runs the Gateway Foundation.

In a recent interview with CNN Travel, Blincow stated that there have been some delays related to Covid, but construction of the space hotel is expected to begin in 2026 and staying in space could become a reality by 2027.

“We’re trying to make it clear to the public that this golden age of space travel is just around the corner. It’s coming. It’s coming quickly,” said Blincow.

A hotel like no other

Space tourism is seen as the next frontier of travel.

Representations of what the hotel might look like suggest an interior not dissimilar to a luxurious hotel on earth, just with some rather peculiar out of this world views.

When the first drafts premiered a few years ago, Tim Alatorre, senior design architect at Orbital Assembly Corporation, told CNN Travel that the hotel’s aesthetic was a direct response to the Stanley Kubrick film, “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which he made “almost a” called blueprint of what not to be done. “

“I think Stanley Kubrick’s goal was to highlight the gap between technology and humanity, and so he purposely made the stations and ships very sterile and clean and alien.”

Instead, Alatorre and his team want to bring a piece of earth into space with warm suites, chic bars and restaurants. Guests may be in space, but they can still enjoy regular beds and showers.

That’s not to say the hotel will ignore the novelty of being in space. It is planned to serve traditional “space food” such as freeze-dried ice cream in the hotel’s restaurant.

It also offers recreational activities which, according to Alatorre, “highlight the fact that you are able to do things you cannot do on earth”.

“Because of weightlessness and decreased gravity, you can jump higher, lift things, and run in ways that you can’t on Earth.”

How does it work?

How exactly would the physics of a space hotel work?

Alatorre told CNN Travel that the rotating wheel would create simulated gravity.

“The station spins and pushes the contents of the station all the way to the edge of the station so you can spin a bucket of water – the water pushes into the bucket and stays in place,” he said.

There’s no artificial gravity near the center of the station, Alatorre explained, but moving outside the station increases the feeling of gravity.

The hotel’s original name was chosen because the concept was inspired by 60-year-old designs by Wernher von Braun, an aerospace engineer who pioneered rocket technology, first in Germany and later in the United States.

During his stay in Germany, von Braun was involved in the Nazis’ missile development program, which is why it was a controversial decision to name the space hotel after him.

That was partly why the name was changed, Blincow told CNN Travel.

“The station isn’t really about him. It’s based on his design, and we like his contributions to science and space,” said Blincow. “But you know Voyager Station is so much more than that. It’s the stuff of the future. And we want a name that doesn’t have those attachments.”

Space tourism is just getting hotter and there are several companies trying to make it happen – from Virgin Galactic to Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

SpaceX’s StarShip system could help get Voyager Station up and running.

At the moment the Space Hotel doesn’t advertise a room rate, but is expecting a fairly high price.

For example, Virgin Galactic plans to take passengers to suborbital space for $ 250,000 per person per trip.

However, the team behind Voyager Station has announced that they hope a stay at the hotel will be “a cruise or a trip to Disneyland”.

“Spaceship Culture”

While the Voyager Station is perhaps Orbital’s most eye-catching design, it’s actually just one facet of their space ambitions.

The team also hopes to build research stations and create opportunities for space tourism and trade.

“We are currently developing the tools and machines with which these structures can be set up very quickly,” Blincow told CNN Travel.

The team envisions that state or private companies could use modules to train crews “on the way to Mars, the moon and beyond,” as Alatorre pointed out at the 2021 live event.

The next phase to getting the Voyager Station up and running is to get more investors into the mix and continue with on-site testing.

The ultimate goal, as Alatorre put it in 2019, is “to create a spaceship culture where people go into space, live in space and work in space and want to be in space. And we believe there is a demand for that.”
